The UK Government has announced a new Industrial Strategy aimed at boosting growth, innovation, and competitiveness across the country’s manufacturing base. With substantial investment and a focus on digital adoption, energy efficiency, workforce skills, and regional development, the strategy outlines a range of opportunities.
A headline announcement is the launch of the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme, designed to lower energy costs for businesses operating in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, batteries, space, and advanced materials. Companies involved in foundational supply chains may also benefit, presenting an important opportunity for many Bowers Group customers.
A consultation on eligibility for this scheme is expected shortly allowing businesses to engage with this process, particularly via industry bodies like the Engineering and Machinery Alliance (EAMA), to ensure their needs are effectively represented.
The Government has pledged £4.3 billion in funding over the next five years to support advanced manufacturing. This includes £2.8 billion dedicated to research and development, alongside specific initiatives such as £99 million to roll out the Made Smarter Adoption programme nationwide, helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) implement digital technologies and £40 million for the creation of Robotic Adoption Hubs, supporting increased use of automation in manufacturing environments.
The strategy takes a broad and forward-thinking approach to artificial intelligence, encompassing technologies such as digital twins, predictive maintenance, and generative design. All of these innovations depend on accurate, connected data inputs, highlighting the crucial role of precision metrology in modern manufacturing environments.
With our expertise in digital measurement solutions, we are well positioned as a key partner for manufacturers looking to adopt AI and data-driven production methods.
To support the adoption of new technologies, the strategy includes several measures aimed at improving technical skills in the manufacturing sector. These include: the introduction of Technical Excellence Colleges, building on existing further education infrastructure., funding for targeted short training courses to upskill the current workforce, supported by the Apprenticeship Levy, and a review of apprenticeship funding bands to ensure better alignment with technical and engineering roles.
These initiatives could help businesses looking to develop internal capability and ensure effective use of new tools and systems on the shop floor.
In addition to ongoing regional investment initiatives, the strategy also aims to unlock land for industrial use, making it easier for manufacturers to expand operations and contribute to local economic growth.
The UK’s new Industrial Strategy marks a clear commitment to a more digitally advanced, energy-efficient, and highly skilled manufacturing landscape. For you, this may translate into lower energy and operational costs, enhanced access to funding for automation and digital transformation, support for upskilling and workforce development and opportunities for strategic expansion and regional growth
